DAY MASTER

What is my Day Master?

It is the character at the centre of your chart — the position a Four Pillars reading treats as you. It comes from your birth date, and nothing else is required to find it.

A Saju chart has four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar carries two characters, one above and one below. The upper character of the day pillar is your Day Master.

There are ten of them — five elements, each in a yang and a yin form. In Korean: 갑, 을, 병, 정, 무, 기, 경, 신, 임, 계. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to this one character, which is why it is the usual starting point.

How it is calculated

Your Day Master is found by converting your birth date into the sexagenary cycle used in Four Pillars. Two details trip people up.

It runs on solar terms, not the lunar holiday calendar. People who convert their own birth date using a lunar calendar app frequently land on the wrong pillar. The Four Pillars year does not begin at Lunar New Year; it begins at the solar term 입춘, usually around the fourth of February.

You do not need a birth time. The hour pillar needs one, and it matters for other parts of a reading, but the Day Master comes from the day pillar alone. If you have never known your birth time, you can still find your Day Master.

The ten Day Masters, in relationships

Read these as opening descriptions to test against your own history — not as conclusions. The useful moment is noticing which part lands and which part is clearly wrong about you.

What people get wrong reading it

Treating it as a type. A Day Master is one of eight characters in your own chart, and your chart is one of two in any relationship. It suggests where to look; it cannot tell you what you found.

Using it to rank partners. There is no Day Master that is good or bad to date. Pairs described as difficult on paper often do well because they built explicit repair habits, and the reverse happens just as often.

Confusing it with the zodiac animal. The animal comes from the year pillar's branch. It is one character out of eight, and the furthest from the centre of the chart.

How to use it well

Turn the description into a scene. If your Day Master is described as self-reliant, do not stop at the adjective — check the last three arguments you had and see whether you went quiet. If you did, the useful move is not to change your personality but to change one thing in that specific moment: saying when you will come back to the conversation instead of leaving it open.

A description precise enough to be wrong is worth testing. One that could describe anyone is not telling you anything.

Find yours

A birth date is enough. The calculation runs in your browser and the details are not stored.
